The keyed Ney overcomes the limitations of the regular Ney in terms of the range of notes through the provisions made on the instrument. The presence of additional holes, along with a key that covers one of the holes, and the ability to rotate the end section of the instrument to add extra notes to its tonal range, enables the keyed Ney to be used more easily and with better sound quality in the performance of Iranian music.

This keyed version—an innovation by Maestro Siavashpour—is slightly longer than regular neys of the same key and provides much greater precision in producing quarter tones. This is especially important when performing in dastgahs such as Bayat Tork or Segah, where quarter tones play a central role. On traditional neys, musicians must carefully adjust breath flow, lips, and teeth to achieve these notes. With the keyed ney, however, playing quarter-tone passages becomes significantly easier and more accurate.
